about

"The Ephemeral Wing" is focused primarily on my long standing relationship with the acoustic guitar. African, American folk and Celtic music traditions were preoccupations during the contemplation and performance of these tracks, and the influence of my classical guitar background is evident. Most of the live and acoustic duo material utilized altered tunings, CGDGAD and BBDF#BD being the most prevalent. Simple gestures were conceived before each performance, and I allowed myself the thrill and terror of trying to expand these gestures before a live audience or in front of a studio microphone.

The title was borrowed from a chapter in an old Time-Life book about insects, found at the Gravity Pub in East Atlanta. It immediately made me think of the film "Last Year at Marienbad," with its dreamlike sequences and mysterious structure. As I listened to these tracks, I found that their structures unfolded in a subconscious manner that reminded me of the film.

The live solo tracks were taken from a performance at the Eyedrum Gallery in Atlanta - a space that is no more but lives on in my memory. Blake and I recorded the acoustic duo tracks in a small, freestanding brick office in Decatur, Georgia. The rooms had no carpet, no dampening at all, which gives the percussion a wonderful presence. These spaces which I can no longer visit and physically inhabit will someday appear as new wings on the buildings in my dreams.
